COL DU TOURMALET print. This hand-coloured image is from the 1949 edition of the Tour de France and shows the leaders descending the Col du Tourmalet during Stage 11. The Tour is one of the most grueling sports events in the world, but also one of the most scenic. Spectacular landscapes are around every corner of this three-week race and the mountain stages provide even more breath-taking vistas.
The Col du Tourmalet is one of the most famous mountain stages and is the highest paved mountain pass in the French Pyrenees at 2,115m. It has been included in the Tour more than any other pass, starting in 1910, when the Pyrenees were introduced.
Col du Tourmalet is a Hors Catégorie (HC) climb in the Tour. Hors Catégorie is a French term used in stage bicycle races to designate a climb that is "beyond categorisation", the most difficult type of climb in a race. The term was originally used for those mountain roads where cars were not expected to be able to pass.

We supply professionally framed prints ready to hang with a choice of flat black, white or natural oak frames 30mm in width. We choose to use Shinkolite 3mm cast acrylic in our frames - it is lightweight, virtually unbreakable, has greater optical clarity than glass and provides your print with long term protection from harmful UV rays greatly reducing the risk of fading.
Our canvas is 400gsm artist quality, real polyester/cotton canvas with a 2:1 weave structure for highest print quality results. The water-resistant coating allows a wide colour gamut and extremely high colour densities. The canvas can be framed or stretched by your local framer.
Our images are professionally scanned and retouched from original sources in our collection of vintage journals, magazines, posters, newspapers and other ephemera from the 1850s to the 1970s.
Our production and design staff are experts in image restoration and have many years' experience in the design and print industry.
