SACRED LOTUS This is a vintage poster print of a botanical illustration of the Sacred Egyptian Bean (also known as Indian lotus, sacred lotus, bean of India, Egyptian bean or simply lotus). It was published in London in 1804 by Dr. Robert John Thornton.
They were part of Dr Thornton’s series of botanical illustrations titled Temple of Flora. He enlisted the talents of the finest flower painters and engravers of the time and the works were the first botanicals to include dramatic landscape backgrounds. This plate was painted by Peter Charles Henderson and engraved by Thomas Burke and Frederick Lewis.
This plant is an aquatic perennial. Under favourable circumstances its seeds may remain viable for many years, with the oldest recorded lotus germination being from that of seeds 1,300 years old recovered from a dry lakebed in northeastern China.
Reportedly Dr Thornton used almost all of his fortune on the series’ production, but in the process created one of the most beautiful and distinctive works of botanical art of the modern era.
